RE: CRITICISMS: SHOULD LAWYERS POSE WITH WIG AND GOWN FOR PRE-WEDDING SHOTS? -by Richarmond Natha-Alade

Eloho Evarista Odebala and Ifeanyi Ogbevire Alonu
There are recent outbursts and criticisms on the propriety of a lawyer and/or two lawyers posing in a fully robed lawyers apparel (wig, gown other kits) to take pre-wedding shots,
which is now the trend of the new generation couples before marriage.

One of the criticism found on a webpage  read as follows:

'Best lawyers pre-wedding shots ever! I CANT BELIEVE THIS. This is professional misconduct or conduct unbecoming of lawyers. It is even worse that some are seeing it as stylish; GOSH! What is the profession turning into?'

I have carefully examined the grounds of such criticism and other criticisms and I found it compelling to give the following opinion:

'I don't see anything wrong with a pre-wedding shots of two lawyers getting married since its once in a lifetime thing.

By present generational trends, we have seen lawyers getting married to police officers, air force officers, custom officers, in fact soldiers and many more who have a peculier way of dressing by their professions and same was obviously flunted for the world to see after a pre-wedding picture had been made.

All the people mentioned in the above categories who engages in such practice are products the current generational trends.

Most professionals of nowadays when getting married puts on their garments of nobility (professional wears) and take pre-wedding shots and display them for all to know the categories of professionals getting married to each other and I belief its a thing of pride contrary to beliefs that it belittles such profession, it rather advertises the profession(s) as a noble one.

No armed robber, kidnapper, 419, even bricklayer, roadside mechanic among others would do such, reasonably.

The only thing that is constant in life is change itself. Many things had been the tradition of the profession over the years and all had been accepted as great ideas, unique to the profession and its practitioners yet not contained in any law or rules.

Why do lawyers go to church fully robed when legal year begins?

Why do we bury our own fully robed, especially the SANs, benchers and Judges?

Why do we conduct some other special events fully robed?

Why do we take pictures with our wigs and gowns on the call to bar day and/or subsequently and hang it on our home and office walls?

Many more questions and the resultant answers would show that all are equal to what the bride and groom-to-be did.

Wedding is a thing of joy meant to be once in a lifetime.  After the pre-wedding shots of couples-to-be, done at the comfort of their home and/or privacy, same is displayed to for world to see that two lawyers are about to wed, It is to put us on notice on the need for our overwhelming presence and supports. And I belief its very honourable of which we should encourage them, congratulate them and wish them well.

We should not take this nobility of the profession too far.

There are several burning issues the bar and bench should address which are but not limited to: judicial corruption, unemployment of young lawyers and their welfare, the overhauling of the entire judicial sector, confronting and finding solutions to the bad eggs in the profession such as: bribe givers, fake lawyers, 419 lawyers, technical justice lawyers and crime-aiding lawyers. The list is endless.

Why I subtle on the approach to this topic without prejudice to any other opinion(s) or stand on same issue, I congratulate the groom and bride to be and as i wish them God's blessings in their new home about to be built.  God bless us all.
