DRAMA IN EKITI PRISON AS CJ OPPOSES LIST OF INMATES TO BE PARDONED BY FAYOSE

Gov. Fayose, Justice Daramola, Chief Judge Ekiti  theand comptroller of prison, Ekiti State

What ought to have been a day of joy for some inmates of the Ado-Ekiti prison turns out to be a bleaking one and their sentence to at least more days in
prison.

The governor of Ekiti state Ayodele Fayose had visited the Ado-Ekiti minimum prison for inspection.

Having been told of the inspection, the Comptroller of Prison had compiled a list of some inmates which would be freed by the prerogative of the governor. Drama however ensued when the list was presented to the governor, But the state chief judge Justice Ayo Daramola raised a strong objection against the list on the ground that the list was unilaterally compiled by the Comptroller of Prison without any recourse to his office.

Justice Daramola averred that the list should pass proper scrutiny in knowing the offences committed by the inmates who are to be pardoned and also to know if they are worthy of the governor's mercy.

Checks however reveal that the business of pardoning inmates has been a long standing racket between the prison officials and the Department of Public Prosecution in Nigeria. Since the Chief Judge too have such authority, it is clear he knew so well what he was saying.

It cannot however be immediately verified if the motive of this public opposition by the Chief Judge is on principle or that of a deal which went awry. The governor Ayodele Fayose, also ordered the review of the list at the end of his visitation.
