OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF NBA: WEEK 12 DIARY

OPNBA Weekly [Week 12]:  – Diary of the Office of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association [OPNBA]

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) being responsive to the needs of the NBA in view
of building #ABraveNewBar carries out activities weekly and it is his desire to keep the members of the NBA informed of his activities in this regard. Therefore, below is a summary of the major events attended and activities which President of the NBA, A. B. Mahmoud, OON, SAN engaged in during this week. The highlights are as follows:

1. Thursday, April 6, 2017:

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, OON, SAN constituted the 2017 NBA Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) under the chairmanship of Professor Konyinsola Ajayi, SAN.

The committee was saddled with the responsibility of planning and organizing the 2017 NBA Annual General Conference slated to hold in Lagos. The NBA Conference which is usually the largest gathering of lawyers in the world, not only provides lawyers with the opportunity to discuss issues of National importance, exchange ideas and experiences, but also affords lawyers a platform for continuing professional development.




2. Tuesday, April 11, 2017:

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, OON, SAN, inaugurated the technical committee responsible for running the 2017 National Conference of the association slated for August, 2017, at Prof Koyinsola Ajayi SAN’s office situated at Olaniwun Ajayi LP, Plot L2, 401 Close, Banana Island, Ikoyi Lagos State. The conference tagged "Eko for Show," is expected to be the world largest congregation of lawyers, which will address topical national issues and matters which have to do with the state of the legal profession.



3. Thursday, April. 13, 2014:

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, OON, SAN, engaged the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai in an interactive session on national security, rule of law, human rights abuses and areas of cooperation between the Military and the Nigerian Bar Association during a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja.

The NBA President, gave a synopsis of the NBA noting particularly that the NBA has thirteen National Officers elected from Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, 125 active branches across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and has approximately 106,000 Legal Practitioners currently enrolled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria to practise law in the country as members. He told the Army Chief; "NBA is governed by a constitution and set of standing orders geared towards promoting the rule of law in Nigeria."
The NBA President expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian Army for their commendable roles in fighting insurgency and bringing terrorism under control, noting that the NBA had been a strong partner in restoring rule of law to the terrorist-devastated areas.

"We created the North East Task Force to bring about reconciliation and building Justice institutions in the area,” He recalled that Professor Muhammad Tabiu, Chairman of NBA- North East Task Force Committee, rendered an account of his committee's engagement with
the military authorities in the process of  reconciliation and rebuilding of the terrorists-ravaged zones of the North Eastern Nigeria, as well as rendering legal services to the victims.

A. B. Mahmoud, OON, SAN recalled NBA's participation in Transitional Justice workshop organised by Mac Arthur Foundation, in Ghana, as a way of restoring  law and order to a crises-ridden area. He recalled efforts by his predecessor, Augustine Alegeh, SAN, in contributing humanitarian services to the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and hospitals in Maiduguri. He noted with concern, some human rights challenges facing some of the suspects being held in detention camps, which were simply unfit for human habitation.

4. Thursday April 13, 2017:

NBA President A. B. Mahmoud OON, SAN returned from the courtesy visit to the Chief of Amy Staff, Nigerian Army, to do a review with his delegation on the mission to the Army headquarters.
He assessed NBA's long standing relationship with the Nigerian Army, and admonished his delegation to do meticulous study of a relationship which previous administrations of NBA had already established with the military.
